Artist's Notes:
After a seven-month break, which included 60 kayaking trips on local lakes and the Rio Grande, I began painting again in late November. The eight Winter Solstice works, which encompass "For Jasper" and "Global Warming," were made between then and the end of 2005.
The first, "For Jasper," was created for my grand-nephew and his parents. He was born seven weeks prematurely via c-section, due to elevated heart rate and arrhythmia, and spent most of his first weeks on Earth in and out of hospitals. I felt a very strong connection with him from the beginning, and the piece reflects some of the experiences surrounding his birth.
All but two of the paintings use a restricted palette of colors ranging from reddish-blues, violets and purples to bluish-reds, with lots of layering and luminosity. For it is in Winter that thoughts and feelings turn inward, and the spiritual fire within is renewed.
