We were greeted by a fierce headwind in addition to the 1070 cfs current on the upstream portion of our kayaking trip today. Ospreys, herons, a Canada goose, and the ubiquitous ravens and turkey vultures kept us company amidst the splendor of the rock formations and stillness.
It took a determined effort to paddle for almost two hours without stopping, but as always, the rewards were wonderful.
Although there are constantly emerging new sandbars and mudflats, we navigated them with relative ease, and when we arrived at Cochiti Canyon the wind had abated.
The ride back was delightful, with the current moving us along at a goodly pace, allowing us to leisurely feast on the river’s delights.
