Today’s Rio Grande trip was quite strenuous due to lower water and strong currents, but we went about 5 miles upstream to Cochiti Canyon for a muddy luncheon and hike. It is amazing how much the river changed in just one week, carving new channels betweeen huge mudflats.
There were lots of colorful, vibrant wildflowers in the canyon due to recent rains.
Bird sightings included a Kingfisher, Canada Geese, Snowy Egrets, Mallard Ducks, Black Phoebes, Spotted Sandpipers, and an Osprey.
Being on the river is always a very uplifting and inspiring experience, with the soaring rock cliffs, willows, and lush vegetation, as well as the stillness and solitude.
