Early October on the River

Despite torrential thunderstorms the previous evening,. we arose in the dark and set out for our adventure. There were clouds, fog, and the sun breaking through to illuminate the cliffs and mountains.

It had been three weeks since our last paddle, but we made it some 5 miles upstream to Cochiti Canyon. Lower water levels made navigating very tricky, and the narrow river channel in places made for strong currents. But the stillness, solitude, and deep connections with Nature were immensely rewarding.

Sightings included Canada Geese, Great Blue Herons, ducks, hawks, and a muskrat. What a gift to have such splendor less than an hour from home!
