Today’s Rio Grande Trip

Despite a rather ominous weather forecast and some torrential night-time rains, we decided to go ahead with our plans. Lots of clouds on the way to the boat ramp, and we took our paddling jackets along because it definitely looked like there would be rain. Much to our delight, however, the sun slowly broke through, and the clouds dissipated.

A flock of ten Snowy egrets, the most we’ve seen in our 16 seasons, greeted us at the northward turn of the river. And there were dozens of Great Blue herons along with some redtail hawks, and a huge beaver on the shore, who kerplunked into the water as we approached.

The rains have turned the water a muddy brown, and there were the usual very strong currents in places, as well as ever increasing sandbanks and mudflats making navigation tricky. But as is usual, we had the entire river to ourselves. We paddled further upstream than we have this season, and enjoyed a great ride part of the way back, until the southwest headwinds picked up.

Another deeply moving and meaningful experience, connecting strongly with nature and the elements. What a blessing!
