This solo adventure, on Saturday, November 14, was on one of the most difficult yet rewarding trails in the Preserve. It was an extraordinary day for mid-autumn, with bright sunshine and temperatures near 60 degrees, so I got to wear shorts and tee shirt once again.
It begins with a very steep and rocky descent in a mostly piñon and juniper forest down to the valley floor.
The trail then traverses along the edges of forested cliffs through grasslands and arroyos.
The ascent is not as steep, and offers wonderful views of the area and colorful, interesting rock formations.
Most of this part of the trail follows the rims of deep canyons.
Fortunately I was in much better condition, after hikes in the Rio Grande Gorge and other challenging terrain, so despite carrying about 25 pounds of gear it was not unduly strenuous.
