I am constantly courting the edge of disaster! But I have learned that if I persevere, something interesting will always emerge. No quitting!!! It does take courage, though, to realize that what is currently on the canvas will completely change with any additions, and to go forward anyway, until getting a sense that the painting is complete.

In terms of basic technique, my approach is usually similar. Make up paint from dispersion and binder, and add thickener until it reaches the desired consistency. Or add paint from jars or tubes to gels, and mix it all together. Mostly I use only soft gel gloss, but right now I am mixing together both soft and regular gel gloss in fairly equal proportions.

I then use a large palette knife to spread, splash, and/or throw the paint onto the canvas. I step back from time-to-time to feel what is next, and continue. If I am not surprised and thrilled, why bother?
