Mud, Rock, Water, and a River Otter

Today’s Rio Grande kayaking trip took us quite a way past Medio Canyon. Despite overcast skies and threat of some rain, the sun managed to peek out now and again.

Many more mudflats and sandbanks, so navigation required extra attention. But we found a not-too-muddy sandbank for our lunch break, and then paddled on further upstream, toward Capulin Canyon.

With lessening water levels, there were no straight lines! We often had to cross at least part way across the river in order to avoid mudflats, and many places had strong currents.

Sightings included ospreys, Great Blue and Black-crowned Night herons, turkey vultures, beaver, and most exciting of all, a river otter. It was diving for fish where the river current meets the lake, on our way back. I have not seen one of these in this part of the river for many years!

So, as always, a deeply connecting and expansive experience.
