Water levels were higher in the river today, due to recent rains. Navigation was easier but the current was stronger, and it required more effort to get upstream to Medio Canyon. And there were no Herons since the mudflats were under water.
Saw our first beaver and Snowy Egret of the season, though, in addition to a huge flock of Canada Geese, lots of Cliff Swallows feeding their young, and more than a dozen Avocets. With the gusty winds, Turkey Vultures enjoyed soaring amongst the cliffs, and the Ravens lent their voices to the proceedings.
We had a long hike at lunchtime in the canyon, marveling at the towering rock cliffs.
The river is always magical, constantly changing and forging new channels. The stillness and solitude is unsurpassed, and we are very fortunate to still be paddling after so many years.
