A sunny but chilly day for our adventure. The site has numerous sculptured rock formations, many of them conical. They were formed over millions of years by volcanic eruptions and subsequent erosion due to wind and water, a process which is ongoing.
The main trail goes through a canyon with steep rock walls, and then through a slot canyon, which is very challenging to negotiate in many places.
It then opens up, with incredible formations on both sides.
The trail then ascends treacherously 630 feet to the top of a mesa, with 360-degree expansive views of mountain ranges, plateaus, and even a lake.
The experience of being amidst the rocks was awesome, and tremendously uplifting and inspiring. Contemplating the forces that created this amazing place offered a sense of vastness and magnificence. Such unspoiled beauty, mostly without human traces other than footprints, was nourishment for our souls.
